Dataset description

The spatial dataset concerns the monitoring of radioactive contamination of surface waters and bottom sediments, which is carried out as part of the State Environmental Monitoring coordinated by the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection. The purpose of monitoring is to provide data on changes in the radiation status of river and lake waters through systematic representative of control of Cs-137 and Sr-90 concentrations in river and lake waters as well as Cs-137, Pu-238 and Pu-239, 240 in bottom sediments. The measurements are conducted in accordance with the methodology approved by the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency. Measurements of radioactive contamination are carried out in waters and bottom sediments from the rivers Wisła, Odra, Bug, Narew and Warta as well as in waters and bottom sediments from six selected lakes in Poland: Wielkie Partęczyny (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship), Drawsko (West Pomeranian Voivodeship), Wadąg (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship), Rogóźno (Lublin Voivodeship), Niesłysz (Lubusz Voivodeship), Wigry (Podlasie Voivodeship). Water samples are taken from the mainstream rivers and from lake bridges, while bottom sediment samples are an average sample from three independent datasets. Samples of water and bottom sediments are taken twice a year, in spring and autumn.
