Dataset description

This data set presents names of publishers and booksellers in Portugal and the history of their websites that is accessible to any citizen on Arquivo.pt. It also includes a collection of news about a type of event held a bit throughout the country throughout the year: the “book Sunday”. **Context** The publishing market changes over time and so does the websites of this sector of activity. Every year new publishers emerge and others disappear. There are well-known brands of the Portuguese that remain but have since become part of new projects. The history of websites mirrors these changes over time. Arquivo.pt is a public web preservation service that collects and maintains accessible content published on the Web since 1996. They constitute a digital heritage for the memory of companies and institutions and for the study and research in various areas. By identifying the websites of publishers and booksellers, in September 2022, Aquivo.pt intended to draw attention to this digital heritage and improve its preservation. A complete list of publishers and booksellers has not been found and this list should be considered open. Contributions and suggestions are expected to increase this list through the [Suggestion form of Arquivo.pt](http://arquivo.pt/sugerir). We sought to include alternative and small-scale editorial projects. Publishers and booksellers for whom we have not found a website or a social page have not been included, as the focus of this list is websites. The name to designate each publisher or bookseller was the one for which it is best known, rather than the name of the business register. It is hoped, in the future, to sensitise people working in this sector to the importance of having a good history of your website and of helping Arquivo.pt to do so as fully as possible. **Sources of information** Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers DGLAB — list of publishers Portuguese Independent Bookstore Network — RELI
