Dataset description

Euroterm is a terminology database that began in 1998 in the Translation Department of the Government Office for European Affairs (SECZ) during the preparation of the Slovenian version of the legal provisions of the European Union (EU). The program for searching in the terminology collection was produced by the former Centre of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Informatics (CVI). The collection was created in order to ensure that the use of terminology is as uniform as possible in the preparation of the Slovenian version of EU legislation and in other documents and translations. It has been available online since August 2000 (overview of programme development and year-by-year data). In June 2005, it was taken over by the Translation Division of the General Secretariat of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The terminology collection is regularly edited and updated. It currently contains more than 133,000 terms. Until 2005 we mainly introduced terminology from translations of EU legislation and other EU-related documents. After Slovenia’s accession to the EU, when the translation was transferred to European institutions, we started to supplement the collection mainly with terms that come from the translation of Slovenian regulations, international treaties, programmes, reports, letters from state bodies, etc., which are important for a wider range of users. In agreement with state services, Euroterm also includes dictionaries and glossaries created in individual portfolios or verified dictionaries, for which individuals or organisations have allowed them to be classified in Euroterm (used resources). In 2010, we added Microsoft terminology collection with more than 18,000 English terms, of which approximately 7500 are translated into Slovenian. Others do not have a Slovenian equivalent, but we have nevertheless classified them in Euroterm due to definitions and translations into other languages (German, French, Spanish and Italian).
