Dataset description

The data set shows sensitive areas due to eutrophication under the Decree on the emission of substances in the discharge of waste water from urban waste water treatment plants (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No 45/07). The Decree transposes into Slovenian law Council Directive 91/271/EEC of 21 May 1991 concerning urban waste water treatment, which requires the identification of sensitive areas for which specific urban waste water treatment requirements are laid down before direct or indirect discharges into water. The Annex to Directive 91/271/EEC sets out various criteria for the designation of sensitive areas. The criteria are also transposed into the Regulation and include the possibility to recognise as sensitive a body of surface water that is eutrophic or could become eutrophic if adequate protection is not ensured. On the basis of those criteria, those surface water bodies where eutrophication had already been detected in the past period, or the susceptibility to eutrophication, were identified as sensitive. The data is intended for the state, local communities and the public to determine, on the basis of the requirements of the Decree on the emission of substances in the discharge of waste water from urban waste water treatment plants (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No 45/07) or on the basis of data from the Operational Programme for the Disposal and Treatment of Urban Waste Water, what level of treatment of urban waste water and the deadlines within which it must be ensured in the area of interest.
