Dataset description

To characterise marine litter of land origin as pressure, the following sources have been identified: coastal population centres, ports, bathing areas, municipal solid waste landfills and rivers. First, all cells located less than 10 km from the identified garbage sources have been selected. Next, it has been added to each cell: — The population associated with the population centers located within the radius of 10 km. — The surface of the ports within the radius of 10 km — The tourist population associated with bathing areas, assuming an average of 1,000 inhabitants/km of coast in the coastal areas of the Demarcation. — The presence/absence of a landfill (layer of selected landfills less than 2 km from the coast) — The presence/absence of any river mouth The population and area values have then been transformed to a scale of 1 to 3. For ports, the surface values have not been used directly, but the following index has been calculated for each cell: Ports = [Summ surface ports] + ([Cell surface area]/[Btruck surface area 10 km cell]) In this way, the following scale has been followed: Scale Ports Population cores Tourist population 1 Ports: 0 to 1 Population Cores: minor 50,000 Tourist Population: minor 50,000 2 Ports: 1 to 10 Core Population: 50,000 to 300,000 Tourist population: 50,000 to 200,000 3 Ports: major 10 Population Cores: major 300,000 Tourist population: over 200,000 Finally, the resulting values have been added, as well as the presence/absence of landfills and river mouths (values 0/1). The final values range from 1 to 10: Very High: 8 to 10/High: 6 to 8/Medium: 4 to 6/Low: 2 to 4/Very Low: 0 to 2
