Dataset description

Atlas which is part of the series that under the joint name of the National Inventory of Habitat and Taxones represent the range of syntaxonomic units (associations and alliances) corresponding to the Spanish habitat types listed in Annex I to Directive 92/43/EEC. It has the mapping of about 150,000 enclosures or representations of such units throughout the national territory, with 1,114 maps and 1,650,000 attributes and associated data. Carried out by the Ministry of the Environment. It is the result of the mapping of Spain’s vegetation on a 1:50,000 scale, considering vegetation as an inventoryable unit. The Inventory used aerial photography and fieldwork for the delimitation of the enclosures, plotted on sheets of map 1:50,000 of the Army Geographic Service (SGE). In addition to polygons, conventional signs (aspas, lines and cross circles) were used for the representation of specific, linear and cave habitat structures. On paper, a manual digitisation of all the sheets was carried out, subsequently joining them in maps by Autonomous Communities. An adaptation of the Habitat classification of Annex I was made to mapped syntaxonomic units on the ground, resulting in the Technical Interpretation Document (DTI), which disaggregated the 124 Spanish habitat types from Annex I into more than 1600 syntaxonomic associations and alliances. It includes the classification of the habitats of Spain with a sheet for each of them at the level of Association, a table of relation of the habitats, descriptive sheets of the same, the biogeographic classification of Spain and other information of a phytosociological nature generated during the project. It includes standards for inventorying and mapping habitats as reference material.
