Decree 49/2003, of 9 May, declares sensitive areas in the Balearic Islands and normal areas, in accordance with the provisions of "Reial decret llei 11/1995", of 28 December, which establishes the rules applicable to the treatment of urban wastewater and "Reial Decret 509/1996", of 15 March.
An aquatic environment is considered a sensitive area if it can be included in any of the following groups:
a) Lakes, lagoons, reservoirs, estuaries and marine waters that are eutrophic or that could become so in the near future if no protection measures are taken.
b) Surface inland waters intended for obtaining drinking water that could contain a higher nitrate concentration established by the corresponding provisions.
c) Bodies of water where additional treatment is required to the secondary one established in article 5 of Royal Decree-Law 11/1995 and Royal Decree 509/1996, in order to comply with the provisions of Community regulations.
