Geological Map of the Canary Islands

Geology is one of the fundamental information that can be available about a territory, since it is the support of the actions that are carried out on it. In addition, it provides substantial information for spatial planning and planning, infrastructure plans and projects, as well as for the assessment of natural hazards and civil protection programmes, among others. On this basis, GRAFCAN carried out, in agreement with the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), the Continuous Geological Map of the Canary Islands for incorporation into the Territorial Information System. Within this agreement, the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain carried out, through the project “Continuous geological map on a 1:25,000 scale”, the homogenisation of the legends and geological interpretations of each of the islands of the archipelago, adapting it at the same time to the reference system of the basic cartography for the Canary Islands. The realisation of the Geological Map of the Canary Islands 1:25,000 is included in the project to generate thematic maps of environmental content for the Canary Islands territory. It has been intended to carry out a geological mapping that allows a quick and effective consultation of all the information facilitating its incorporation into Geographic Information Systems. The starting information for the realisation of this map has been the geological cartography belonging to the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME). The Topographic Map 1:25,000 and the Orthophoto 1:5,000 have also been used as support products.
