Climate Risk Analysis on the Asturian coast
Coastal systems are particularly vulnerable to rising average sea levels and changes in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. In addition to the risk of permanent flooding in low-lying areas due to rising average sea level (NMM), other impacts of climate change include increased erosion on beaches and cliffs, degradation of coastal ecosystems, and salt intrusion. The most significant changes will occur in the NMM, ambient temperature and sea surface temperature.
Complex interactions between the natural and socio-economic system coexist on the coast, suggesting that the consequences of climate change can manifest in many ways. Risk assessment analyses allow to identify the areas most exposed to different impacts, understand the origin of them, identify their extent and severity and assist in the elaboration of management plans and decision-making such as adaptation strategies.
