Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) are areas of Europe designated as community interest for their potential contribution to restoring natural habitat, including ecosystems and biodiversity of wild fauna and flora. They emanate from European Union Directive 92/43/EEC. These sites, selected by the different member states on the basis of scientific studies, will become part of the Special Conservation Areas, which will be integrated into the Natura 2000 network. SCI data become official only when the respective biogeographical lists of SCIs are approved by the European Commission.
