Dataset description

The Geological Map of the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic and Canary Islands or Geological Map of Spain on a 1:1,000,000 scale is a map developed by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) in a cyclical way since its foundation, with the 1995 version being the first to be digitised. This map is a homogeneous and global geological knowledge infrastructure to a geological unit of continental scale such as the Iberian Peninsula. The Map contains the chronolithostratigraphic units with representation of the tectonic structure by faults and rides. It is also accompanied by two chronolithostratigraphic legends (Peninsula and Balearic Islands and Canary Islands) and conventional signs. Each of the geological units has associated its description, the dominant rock types and the chronostratigraphic age accurately up to the floor, when available. There is no difference between the contacts of the cartographic units, all of them being considered as lithological contacts, except for those that are the product of faults. The map is consistent with a 1:1,000,000 scale topographic base prior to the BCN 1000 of the IGN that is only available in paper format. The geological information of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands is in projection UTM, spindle 30, datum Postdam. The information of the Canary Islands is in projection UTM, spindle 28, datum Pico de las Nieves. The map is distributed free of charge in shape format through the IGME website.
