Dataset description

The Web Map Service called Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean allows the visualisation and consultation of the data set of protected coastal and marine spaces that guarantee the survival of the values and biological resources of the Mediterranean; they contain ecosystems typical of the Mediterranean area or habitat of endangered species, have a special scientific, aesthetic or cultural interest. They are declared under the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona, 1976). It includes the Protocol on Specially Protected Areas and the Biological Diversity of the Mediterranean (1995) which creates an international protection figure, the Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean (SEPIM). The geographical data comes from the Autonomous Communities and Cities, the associated database is adapted to the data model established for this information in the Nature Data Bank. The date of creation of the geographical data is May 2006 and the date of the last update due to modifications of the limits of Alboran Island was in May 2010.
