Emissions in numbers, application

Emissions in figures are a Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) similar to those existing in several countries within Europe and globally. The register contains a database of emissions from the approximately 1100 largest companies in Sweden that carry out activities classified as hazardous to the environment. For some air pollutants, Sweden’s annual total emissions are shown. The numbers shown are public. They are included in the environmental report that each company has to submit to its supervisory authority once a year. All companies for which information is available in the register have a permit for their activities and for their emissions. “Emissions to air” are based on the figures that Sweden reports annually to the Climate and Air Protection Conventions. The purpose of the register is to meet the requirements of the Aarhus Convention — to make available information on emissions to the environment in a simple way. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency also compiles data on emissions to submit to the government as a basis for political decisions.
