Dataset description

PMP is a forecasting database that is quality controlled by a meteorologist. The database consists of forecast values placed in a grid (field). Each parameter has a value in each grid point and at each specific time. The distance between the grid points is about 2.8 km. The time resolution of the information in the PMP will be reduced gradually. For the first days there are data for each hour, then data for every three hours, then every six hours, and for the last days in the database the time resolution is 12 hours. PMP is created by the meteorologist selecting data from a number of forecast models and using methods for post-processing. The final product, the PMP data set, contains forecast data for up to 240 hours. PMP data includes a range of parameters and codes for weather symbols. A description of these can be found here: https://opendata.smhi.se/apidocs/metfcst/parameters.html PMP data can be obtained via two different questions against an API. One question provides PMP data for one point at a time. In the link you can enter any latitude and longitude within the PMP area (approximately the Nordic region). The API returns data from the nearest grid point in this area. An example of calls with selected coordinates is: https://opendata-download-metfcst.smhi.se/api/category/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/point/lon/16/lat/58/data.json The second question provides PMP data for the whole of Sweden for a selected parameter. An example of a call that provides data for a time step (valid time), a parameter, a leveltype and a level: https://opendata-download-metfcst.smhi.se/api/category/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/multipoint/validtime/20151012T150000Z/parameter/t/leveltype/hl/level/2/data.json?with-geo=false It is possible to reduce the resolution of the data (for the whole of Sweden) by a query parameter as follows: https://opendata-download-metfcst.smhi.se/api/category/pmp3g/version/2/geotype/multipoint/validtime/20151012T150000Z/parameter/t/leveltype/hl/level/2/data.json?with-geo=false&downsample=10 The Downsample value can be set between 1 and 20. The value of 10 means that data for every ten lat and every ten lon is delivered. One risk of evacuation is that data from lakes, mountain peaks and solips can be misleading. Culled data should only be used for visualisation, not for analysis. For more information on how to use the Services, please see: https://opendata.smhi.se/apidocs/metfcst/ COORDINATES: Coordinates of the area are given by the corners: Southwest 52.50 N, 2.25 W Northwest 70.67 N, -8.55 E Northeast 70.74 N, 37.93 E Southeast 52.54 N, 27.39 W Grid windows are about 2.8 km away. USE: At SMHI, PMP is used as a basis for forecasts for both the general public and commercial customers. Weather forecasts on smhi.se and the smhi app are based on information from PMP. FORMAT: Data is delivered in JSON format, see user guide above.
