Dataset description

The product contains information on the strength and characteristics of peat layers, such as peat composition, degree of humification and wetness. The information is based on observations from drilling in peatlands. To a large extent, the material consists of information digitised from SGU’s peat archive. This archive contains a large amount of information about the characteristics and distribution of the Swedish peat. The material consists of results from inventories, reports, maps, diaries and publications from the last hundred years. Since the material has been collected for a long time, different nomenclatures have been used. In addition, positioning accuracy varies depending on the map data used in the collection. SGU’s website provides further information on the extensive analogue material available in the peat archive. The product also includes data collected in the 21st century.
