Dataset description

DESCRIPTION The model system calculates a range of radiation parameters at the surface of a grid across north-western Europe for every hour. Each square represents an area of 11x11 km (For 2006-06-01 the resolution was 22*22 km). In this way, we get information about radiation both over land and at sea. The calculations are based on knowledge of, among other things, the geographical distribution of clouds, water vapour, ozone and soil surface. The calculations are made once a day for the previous day. Data, fields and maps are available from 1999. Model-calculated data and maps are available for: CIE-weighted UV radiation, global radiation, direct radiation, sunshine time and Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). The results show the conditions at every hour (minute 00) around the clock. In order to calculate the different parameters, STRÅNG needs meteorological data from a number of other models available at, for example, SMHI. These models are MESAN, HIRLAM and HIROMB. Ozone information is obtained from the ECMWF or the TOMS satellite instrument. For more info see: https://strang.smhi.se COORDINATES Coordinates of the area are given by the corners: southwest 48.5N, 10.5 W Northwest 75.1N, 11.5 W northeast 63.3N, 51.6E southeast 42.4N, 22.9E The grid windows are 11*11 km. However, the model is developed and validated for Sweden only. USE Strång-data are used to gain an idea of how solar radiation conditions have been for a certain period of time, at a certain location where observations are missing or over a larger area. Applications can be used in meteorology, solar energy, biology, medicine, etc. FORMAT Data is delivered in ASCII format.
