Forest area

The forest of the canton of Zurich has been updated as part of the “Periodic follow-up of official surveying” (PNF) 2017/2018. The derived spatial data set forest area comprises larger stocked areas within the cantonal borders. These are divided at the municipal boundaries. Smaller unstocked areas (< 800 m²) as well as streams and forest paths belong to the forest area. Larger waters and through roads are spared or subdivided. Stockings < 800 m² (so-called field woods) are no longer included in the spatial data set. A follow-up of the spatial data is in principle planned only in the case of grubbing-up or grubbing-up replacement, or if there are obvious errors and may be carried out by the ARE, department of cadastre. The forest area has no direct legal effect, but forms the basis for the municipal determination of the static forest borders in the canton of Zurich, which are being tackled together with the cantonal planning of use.
