Dataset description

With the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, the so-called Ramsar Convention, Switzerland has committed itself to ensuring the sustainable use of wetlands and to provide special protection to areas of international importance. In 4 stages, Switzerland has included a total of 11 protected areas at federal or cantonal level in the list of internationally important wetlands, with 3 areas being adapted to new protection perimeters in the meantime. They were selected mainly because of their importance as habitat for waterbirds. Purpose: Official documentation for registration with the IUCN and documentation of the individual wetlands in the Ramsar database.
