Dataset description

A survey of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is conducted in Northern Ireland each year. The data is used for fish stock assessment/monitoring and fishery management. The data is collected using electric fishing techniques and the surveys are undertaken on 7 rivers within the DCAL (Dept Culture, Arts & Leisure) area of Northern Ireland. Surveyed rivers include the Glendun, Bush & Main in Co. Antrim, the Blackwater in Co. Tyrone, the Shimna in Co. Down, the Clady in Co. Londonderry and the Garvary in Co. Fermanagh. The electric fishing surveys are based on a CPUE (Catch per unit effort) or semi-quantitative technique developed to assess the relative density and distribution of salmon fry on a catchment wide scale (Crozier & Kennedy, 1993). The relative abundance of fish can be described for each monitoring site according to a classification scheme ranging from absent to excellent (Crozier & Kennedy, 1993 ). Surveys are conducted during the summer months at a variable number of monitoring stations, depending on the overall river length. Digital data is available for 2010 and 2011.
