Dataset description

Darwin Plus Project 053 http://www.darwininitiative.org.uk/documents/DPLUS053/24132/DPLUS053%20AR1%20-%20edited.pdf The dataset is under Embargo until data analysis has been completed and ready to be published as Open Data. Global Positioning System (GPS Pathrack) data loggers were attached to breeding northern rockhopper penguins during incubation, guard and crèche stages between September to December 2016 on Nightingale (37°25'S, 12°28'W; 4 km2) and Inaccessible (37°17'S, 12°40'W; 14 km2) islands. Tracking data augmented and complement existing data sets for the species breeding in the South Atlantic, which enable us to systematically identify areas of particular relevance for this species and thus to help determining whether there is a need to improve marine spatial planning in form of e.g. Marine Protected Areas in the island’s EEZ. There are two data types for each penguin a) the unprocessed raw and b) the processed GPS data (details below). All files are in the CSV format. Data were collected as part of the Darwin Plus funded Project Pinnamin, 2016 – 2018, a joint multi-institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration between the RSPB, Tristan da Cunha government, British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in South Africa.
