Dataset description

Fifteen sites in Loch Eriboll and approaches form the basis of brief descriptions of the littoral fauna and flora. The main communities are described, including those on bedrock shores, boulder, shingle and gravel shores, sandy shores and areas of siltation. The shores are considered as standard for north-west Scotland. Some information on the sublittoral was obtained from local fishermen and divers. Few fish were observed, and fishermen confirmed that commercial fish were lacking. Lobsters and Pecten are fished commercially. Caves are not mentioned (see Moss, 1986). The lack of tidal flushing in the inner part of the loch is mentioned as a region of potential pollutant accumulation. Appended are some useful comments on north-western floras and faunas in general, related to specific habitats. A species list is also appended.
