Dataset description

Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention. This dataset contains details for all habitat cover data for all designated Ramsar sites within the UK and its Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. The dataset lists habitat type drawn from a standard list used by the Ramsar Secretariat for all Ramsar sites in the world. The % cover of each habitat is shown. Note that these data have not been updated since the original Ramsar Information Sheets were compiled in 1998 except in cases where the site has been either newly designated or extended since then. Commonly specified habitats in the UK are: Peatlands (including peat bogs swamps, fens) Sand / shingle shores (including dune systems) Freshwater marshes / pools: permanent Salt marshes Freshwater lakes: permanent Tidal flats
